Original Equipment Manufacturer

Put simply, “O.E.M.” is actually a business identification whereby a product flows from the manufacturer through one or more companies to reach the end user.

Step 1.Manufacturing the Product

The first of those companies is the manufacturer.

The term OEM was first used in the United States in the early 1960′s and 70′s, perhaps rooted in the Dutch phrase, “onder eigen merk,” which translates as “under own brand.”

An example is a vehicle manufacturer whose brand remains on their vehicles when retailed to the public through their dealerships.

 

 

 

 

 

Step 2. Purchasing the Manufacturer’s Product

Today, the term may also be used by a company that buys a manufacturer’s product or component and reuses or combines it with another product, using its own brand name.

The first example is Sear’s purchase of Frigidaire’s products and rebranding them as Sear’s products.

A second example is when a company, selling LED lights, merges them with an LED light fixture—acquired from a manufacturer—then sells them both under the company’s own name.
